VILLA MASSIMO IN CITTÁ Villa Massimo Rom 2021

An exhibition in public space and at the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo with bankleer (Kasböck/Leitner), Heike Baranowsky, Unsuk Chin, Gustav Düsing, Franziska Gerstenberg, Prinz Gholam, Benedikt Hipp, Andrej Koroliov, Alexander Schimmelbusch and Regina Schmeken

For the presentation of the fellows of the Accademia tedesca di Roma, Villa Massimo in cittá, Regina Schmeken has created three niches in the forecourt of the “Chiesa di N.S. del SS. Sacramento e SS. Martiri Canadesi” in Via G.B. de Rossi, whose plot is right next to the villa in the Nomentano district. Schmeken understands the architectural arrangement of the niches as an invitation to design them with a large-format triptych. Under the title “Once upon a time”, she has put together three works from different series from 2020. In addition, she is showing a tableau of works of early picture series from the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s in the Villa Massimo gallery under the title “Il nero è bianco”, created during travels and longer stays in Venice, Rome and Milan, Paris and New York. These are works from the beginning of her career that already hint at the development of Regina Schmeken’s work. Among them is the painting Manhattan Skyline, which recalls the attacks of September 11, 2001, which this year marks the 20th anniversary.
