THE SUBJECTIVE LENS – Lecture by Regina Schmeken MVHS 2019

Monday, December 09, 2019, 19 p.m., Gasteig – Münchner Volkshochschule/Munich Adult Education Centre

The question of the “power of images” and their influence on society is explored in selected pictorial concepts and photographic positions. What can photography achieve if image strategies are consistently pursued over a long period of time and references are made to a larger context? How is our perception shaped when the results of these image creation processes accompany us over many decades? The constitution of society is examined. Images can clarify or disguise, create authenticity or illusions, hope or devastation. What does political photography mean?

“Regina Schmeken’s photography, which has many friends in Germany and is read with loving respect, rarely combines the terms reality and fairytale-like. Thirdly, the conscious use of the shaping factor light, paradoxically speaking, gives rise to that little bit of sharpness or uncannyness of content that makes these “found” images memorable and post-effective”, says Claus Heinrich Meyer on the work of the artist. The lecture gives an overview of Schmeken’s work for almost 40 years and, analogous to the program’s focus on democracy, thematizes the photographer’s special view of political and social events.
